October / Halloween 2012

October flew by but we were able to get in a few fun activities before it was over. I took the girls to Six Flags for one last adventure before the end of the season. It was pretty cold so we didn't stay long and we made it out of there just as all the ghouls and monsters started to come out. After seeing some of them the girls were more than happy to be leaving.

Each year we like to carve pumpkins and see what fun designs we can come up with. This year Aunt Amanda told the girls that they saw a box full of 'Special Pumpkins' at the store and bought a few. We had never heard of special pumpkins before but the girls were super excited to see what they were all about. The story goes that a farmer plants a batch of special seeds each year and some time a special pumpkin will grow. They only way to know if you got one is by cutting it open and looking inside. We got 3 pumpkins this year and only one ended up being special. What makes this pumpkin so special? It was filled with candy instead of seeds!!

Taevin wasn't really into the idea of touching the pumpkin guts so we let him paint his pumpkin.

Here are the finished products.

I met up with the crafting ladies and we made these cute door hangers.

This year for Halloween we went to the church for Trunk or Treating and then did a little more in that neighborhood. By the time we were done Taevin was tired and it was getting cold so we called it a night. When we got home Damian was there and the girls ended up talking him into taking them around our neighborhood as well.

Pool time

After 2 summers we finally got our pool installed and ready to swim. To bad it is only 50 outside and not quite warm enough for a swim or i'm sure the girls would be in it.

Summer can't come fast enough!

Who's up for a pool party?

DiGeorge conference and Ohio doctor consult

On September 21st Amanda, Taevin and I left for Columbus Ohio for the Nationwide Children's Hospital 22Q and You conference which was held the next day. (A little side note: Taevin has something called 22Q 11.2 Deletion Syndrome. He is missing part of his 22nd chromosome. This syndrome is also called DiGeorge Syndrome, VCFS, Catch 22 and a few other names. I will be calling it 22Q for most of my posts.)

So after about a 7 hours drive we arrived in time to have dinner with a group of other 22Q families who were also attending the conference. They are an amazing group and I am so luck to have come across their support group on Facebook. We were a bit late but here is a picture of some of the ladies and their cute kiddos.

The next morning I got up early and headed to the conference while Amanda and Taevin hung out at the hotel. They got in a lot of TV watching and book reading while I learned so much wonderful information about this syndrome and how to help Taevin. Here is a picture of a few of us during lunch at the conference. Some super amazing ladies right there.

After the conference and a good nights sleep we packed up and drove the 2 hours to Cincinnati for Taevin's week long appointments with the doctors at the airway clinic. This visit was to get a second opinion on his airway and breathing issues that he has been dealing with.

After we arrived, with time to spare before we could check into our hotel, we drove around the town and stumbled upon Oktoberfest. We spend a good 3 hours walking up and down the street looking at all the booths and enjoying some really yummy funnel cake. Then it was off the the hotel for some much needed rest before our long week of appointments.

Cincinnati Children's Hospital has an awesome Aerodigestive Clinic that evaluate children with breathing, sleep, eating, Gi issues to see what can be done to help them. During this evaul you meet with a team of doctors that go over and test each of your child's issues to find out the best course of action for them. We saw them because we were told that Taevin has a narrowed airway and would need reconstructive surgery to repair it. We were told by his ENT in Chicago, since birth, that he has sub glottic stenosis,  a laryngopharyngeal cleft and glottic webbing. The findings for each of these have never been consistent and the breathing issues caused us to seeking a second opinion before we agree to the surgery.

The first day Taevin has 2 appointments, they were very spaced out and made it so we had to spend the whole day at the hospital. It was a very long day with nothing for a 2 year old to do. You would think being a children's hospital they would have some toys or a play area but sadly no.  We were lucky enough to find a swing set just down the road and took advantage of it while waiting for our second appointment.

 The results from day one were:

* They saw little to no movement of his vocal cords and saw that he was using his epiglottis to compensate. He did end up pulling the scope out before they got a really good look though. Little stinker!

* He was in good health and cleared for sedation tests.

That night at the hotel while watching TV he plopped himself down between Amanda's legs and stayed there for a while. It was really funny.

 Day 2 we saw the Pulmonologist and GI. He also had a swallow study and a CT. It was another long day which we spent the majority of the day at the hospital. That evening we took a little walk and found a park not far from the hotel. After a a few trips down the slide and a walk down the town square we had a quick bite to eat and then headed back for a good nights sleep.

Day 2 test results:

*  The doctors got a medical history and did an exam.

*Showed no signs of aspiration and can now start to be weened from his thickener. Yippie!

Taevin at the park

Day 3 and 4 run together. We had to be at the hospital really early for his tests. They took him back sedated him, drew blood, (after about 6 sticks and the use of an ultra sound) preformed the scope, bronchoscope and inserted the PH probe for his 23 hour reflux test. After he wake up they did another scope to look at his vocal cords. He was then admitted for the night.

Test results day 3:

* Little to no narrowing of the airway.
* Small, unimpressive laryngopharyngeal cleft.
* Glottic webbing but not concerned about it.
* Movement but not full closure of vocal cords.
* Blood work all normal.
* Lining of stomach normal.
* Lungs clear and normal.
* Minor bronchomalacia
*Aorta pressing on esophagus but not causing harm.

What do you do in the hospital if your baby isn't sick but has to be there? You walk the halls over and over and over. Eat and then walk the halls again. This little boy did not want to sit still! Finally after the 23 hours and a rough nights sleep we were discharged.

Day 4: The doctors came to the conclusion that it was most likely his heart that was causing all the problems and suggested we see our Cardiologist. We told them that we had already and was told it was  not his heart. They then suggested we see one of their cardiologist for a second opinion. We were planning to go home that day and were told they had no open appointments so we headed back to the hotel packed up and started home.  We didn't get far when the call came. They had a cardio who was able to see us the next day, so we turned around and checked back in to the hotel.

Day 5 we woke up early and headed to the hospital for the cardio appointment. After reviewing the report from our Cardio in Chicago he told us the agreed with them. Other then listening to his heart the only other thing they did was a EKG which looked good. So with no answer we were sent on our way.

Waiting at the Cardiologist's office.

Back at the hotel we packed up once again and headed home. It was a long trip with mixed results. We got good results about his airway and were happy to find that he would not be needing the surgery to fix it, but other then that we were left with a lot of unanswered questions.

Happy 9th Birthday Areya!

Areya turned 9 on September 23rd. She, Aniela and their Grandma Deja had a little party together since Amanda, Taevin and I were in Ohio for a doctors visit and Damian had to work.

She got toe shoes from us and was so excited to wear them.

She got money from Damian's parents and spent it on books at her school book fair.

I was pretty sad about missing her special day. We were able to have a little mommy and Areya time once I got back though. She is growing up so fast.

About Areya:
Favorite colors: light blue and pink
Favorite food: cheese pizza
Favorite subject in school: Art
Teeth lost: 7
Loves to swim, play with her friend, do crafts, and watch movies.

Here are a few pictures of Areya as a baby.

Piccadilly Circus

The circus came to town and we were able to go with our good friends the McMillian's. It has been such a long time since I have been to a circus. I think the last time we went was right before we moved to Illinois when Aniela was a baby.

I was so much fun and made me feel like a little kid again. Can't wait for the next one!

Taevin dentist/airway procedures Aug 22 2012

Teeth
On Aug 22nd Taevin had a procedure done where they cleaned all his teeth, filled all his cavities and then all but his canines (which are not all the way in) were capped. The procedure took about 4 hours and every thing went great. Why did he need this procedure?

Taevin has little to no enamel and already at 2 had several cavities on each tooth. He didn't get his first tooth until 17 months so this all happen in less then 10 months.  They said the caps should last for about 5 years at which point his baby teeth should be falling out. Fingers crossed his adult teeth come in healthier!

He goes in every 3 to 6 months for cleaning and to check his caps.

Airway
 In Jan of 2012 I noticed Taevin having labored breathing while playing and during physical therapy. He also gets pale, sweaty and has to rest after a short time. So I called the cardiologist to see if it could be heart related they said it did not sound like a heart issue and sent us to the Ear Nose & Throat doctor. The ENT ordered a bronch and said that it was more then likely he needed reconstructive surgery on his airway to make it bigger. This surgery is super invasive and would require up to 4 week hospital stay with 2 weeks of full sedation on breathing tubes. *I got a very sick feeling but agreed that if his airway was causing the breathing issues then this would be the best thing to help him. After a very long and frustrating round of calls and visits we got the procedure scheduled for Aug.

The bronch came back saying his airway is narrowed but the numbers contradicted the last 2 they did. The ENT seemed to think this was normal and said Taevin was fine and it was not his airway causing the breathing problem. He sent me back to the cardiologist.

* While this was all going on I still didn't have a good feeling about the reconstructive surgery so I did some research and found a doctor in Cincinnati who is a specialist on airways and have a clinic that test and evaluate children with breathing issues. I set up an appointment and had a evaluation date in September.

So 8 months in and still no answers to why he is having such a hard time breathing during physical activity.

First day of school 2012/13 school year

Tennessee Drive 2012

On our drive to Tennessee this year we had quite the experience. We left at night once Damian got off work so the kids would sleep through the longest part of the trip. We took our new camping trailer and had the bikes hooked to the back.

The kids were asleep, Damian was driving and out of no where a van came up and was riding us. Damian slowed down and let him pass. Not 2 minutes after he passed he veered off the road and hit the cement barrier in the middle going up the side and then coming back down. The van then veered into our lane and was close to hitting us. He then veered back and hit then barrier again. He was riding the barrier trying to get back in his lane. After about a minute or 2 of this and lots of sparks he finally got back into his lane. Damian slowed way down but was going fast enough to keep up with him. After a bit his tire blew and he was driving  on a flat tire. He finally got over to the slow lane but continued to drive. At this point there was stuff leaking out of the van and sparks, smoke and small flames coming out from it. I was getting worried so I called 911. After another mile he finally pulled over to the side of the road. While on the phone with 911 we stopped to see if he was ok and needed anything. He said "no, it's only a flat tire" The 911 operator told us to keep driving and that she would send the police to check on him.

It was crazy and we couldn't believe that all happened and no one got hurt. After a bit we saw the police car going in the other direction and then shortly after we got a call asking about what happened and what the guys looked like. He had ditched the car and took off on foot. They thanked us for calling. A few minutes later we got another call form the dispatch operator asking if there were any one else in the van with the guy. There were car seats in the back and they were worried that kids might have been in the car. Damian and I had been thinking the same thing and checked at the time we stopped to ask if he needed help. Luckily there wasn't.

We were very blessed that he passed us when he did and that he didn't hit us when he came back into our lane. That is definitely a drive we will never forget.

Tennessee Aug 2012

This time around we made a trip the Wild Animal Park & Camel Safari where we got to hand feed zebras, elk, deer, emu, buffalo and many other animals while driving through the 105 acre park with our doors and windows open. The animals came right up to us.

After the car ride we were able to visit the petting zoo where we could touch hold and feed many other animals including llamas, goats, birds, a baby camel and a hedgehog.

 I was super surprised but Taevin loved feeding the animals and wasn't scared at all. He even threw a fit when it was time to go.

They also had camel rides and who doesn't want to ride a camel? The girls both rode and can now add it to their lists of cool experiences. I think the kids really enjoyed their visit to the animal park. Thank you Aunt Kimmy for taking us on such a fun outing.

During this trip we also went camping in the Smoky Mountains and did what every other family does in the middle of summer while camping......... had an Easter egg hunt. What do you mean other families don't do this in Aug? Oh well, the kids had a blast and it kept them busy for a while.

That first morning we got up way to early and took a 11 mile bike ride around the loop. I know 11 miles in the wee hours, what was I thinking!!! Man did that 11 miles kick my butt, it might have been a little easier if I did have a 2 year old strapped to the back of my bike and if there wasn't so many up hill spots. You will be proud to know that Areya and I finished the whole thing, that's a big deal for a 8 year old and a fat lady that hasn't really exercised since her 2 year old was born.

We ended up only staying one night because it rained and no one wanted to spend another night. Which I don't understand?  I stayed nice and cozy in our camper and didn't have any problems with the rain.

For the rest of the trip the men spent a lot of time fishing while the rest of us cooked and ran after all the little monkeys. (4 boys (5 & under) and 2 girls) It was a great trip and we are looking forward to our Alaska trip next year. (fingers crossed)
